Product Description
Two-time Best Actor OscarÂ(r) winners* Spencer Tracy and Fredric March go toe-to-toe in this thrilling re-creation of the most titanic courtroom battle of the century. Garnering four Academy AwardÂ(r) nominations**, including Best Actor (Tracy), and featuring Gene Kelly in a rare, critically-acclaimed dramatic role, Inherit the Wind is powerful, provocative cinema and "a heaping measure of entertainment" (The Hollywood Reporter)! The controversial subject of evolution versus creation causes two polar opposites to engage in one explosive battle of beliefs. Attorney Clarence Darrow (Tracy) faces off against fundamentalist leader William Jennings Bryan (March) in a small Tennessee town where a teacher has been brought to trial for teaching Darwinism. Let the trial begin...and watch the sparks fly!

The climax comes when a famous private lawyer, William Jennings Bryan, aiding the public prosecutor, uncoventionally agrees to be questioned on the stand as a biblical authority by the equally celebrated private lawyer for the defense, Clarence Darrow . The prosecuting attorney sees it as an opportunity to boost his reputation as a creationist and evangelical orator, but his presentation devolves into buffoonery.
Darrow was a leading member of the ACLU, famous for having recently used a successful psychological defense in a kidnapping-and-murder case to get life sentences for Leopold and Loeb, instead of an execution.
Bryan was famous for his progressive political stands, which included opposition to imperialism and the gold standard of currency and his support of the vote for women and grass-roots democracy in the form of initiative & referendum and the direct election of U.S. Senators to replace their selection by a state’s legislature. Bryan served as U.S. Secretary of State and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Presidency as a Democrat three times.
The following is the stirring conclusion of Bryan’s famous “Cross of Gold” speech, which, in 1896, helped catapult him to candidacy for the U.S. Presidency:
"You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns; you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold."
Over the centuries, many Americans have held the belief that our nation, starting with its hard-won independence over powerful England, has been blessed with divine providence. With such a wind beneath their wings, many of our politicians have served up a heapful of evangelical oratory, sometimes flirting with demagoguery. Such an aura surrounded the charismatic William Jennings Bryan in real life, as in the movie, "Inherit the Wind." The rise and fall of such hubris-afflicted, larger-than-life characters has been the dramatic arc of many famous films.

This one was the real deal, and good price for a classic.
As others on here have stated, it is a powerful and well important movie to make sure you’ve seen.
Spencer Tracey was at his best in my opinion. As was Gene Kelly too.
As titled to this review, there is something special to have a classic Black and White movie be done right on Blu-ray. It was as clear as a new movie, but retained and respected the classic look that helped ground this movie (compared to its many remakes later).
If you are a movie buff, or someone who does appreciate a profound movie - both in acting, as well as topic tone, I encourage you to have this one in your collection.
This film has a theatrical style in its telling of a theatrical courtroom drama. Its use of light and shade is wonderful, as is the hymn-singing which carries the story along.
And the humour. For a serious film about a serious subject, the sharp-witted words and moments of humour bring forth wry chuckles.
For me, the fact this was based on a real story, and a real trial, makes it all the more gripping, and led me to discover much more about the "The Scopes Trial", its reasons, and its combatants. This is more than a film, it is a pleasure to watch and educational at the same time - quite appropriate given that it was a teacher on trial for the education he provided to his pupils.
Hay que tener en cuenta que es una película de hace casi 60 años, sin efectos especiales y probablemente con presupuesto limitado?
