Great classic movie!
5 Stars
Great classic movie!
Burt Lancaster and Kurt Douglas....how could you go wrong??!! This movie is great. Took my kids to Tombstone and when we got home they wanted me to get this movie since we had watched the reenactment of the Gunfight at the OK Corral. They loved it.This movie was made in 1957 and runs 122 mins long. The acting is great and for an old movie looks great. I could watch it over and over.

It's nice to see a seventy-year-old film brought back to life in this format, with some great performances by several actors.
When you see some of the classic films, you understand how some later films in the genre borrow from them and are built upon them. The Gunfight at the OK Corral is a good prequel or companion to Tombstone.

I love this film for the story, the music and for the cinematography. However when I received the DVD I was tremendously disappointed in it's quality. The DVD I received was obviously recorded by projecting an old somewhat scratchy film onto an old screen. The evidence is that in the opening scenes, the entire sky flickers light and dark and there are several "hot spots" on the screen which become annoying in any scene that displays blue sky in the upper right hand half of the screen. The really annoying flickering comes from not allowing the arc lamp used in the projector to warm up. It takes several minutes for such a projection lamp to stabilize and whoever made this DVD clearly did not allow sufficient time for the lamp to come up to temperature. The "hot spots" on the screen are areas that
reflect more light than the surrounding area and therefore appear brighter. After a time the flickering settles down, but the hot spots are there for the entire movie. The DVD was not expensive, but still, one expects that a "new DVD" will be made from a cleaned and restored original that is scanned directly into the digital format rather than from a scratchy old film projected onto a similarly old projection screen. Just my two cents.

In the decade of the 50s, Westerns were king at the local theaters. In my pre-teen and early teenage years I know I attended the Saturday matinee on innumerable Saturdays, where more times than not, the featured films were Westerns. I saw this in the theater in 57 (when I was 13) probably as part of a double-feature matinee and I know I enjoyed it, as I did virtually all Westerns - they were and still are my favorite genre. I hadn't seen it for years until I purchased this DVD a couple of years ago. I've watched it several times since then. Watching it as a senior with a more critical slant, it still passes muster as a great Western; one of my personal favorites. I don't do rankings, but I'd probably place it among my personal top 40. I know today that it's not a historically accurate portrayal of the gunfight, but so what! It is great entertainment and really, most Westerns that portray historical events take liberties with the facts. The screenplay was written by Leon Uris, who was a pretty fair writer, and he does well by this one. "Gunfight" is worth watching just to see Burt Lancaster (as Wyatt Earp) and Kirk Douglas (as Doc Holliday) together...this was one of several collaborations and in my opinion, their best. The support acting is also exceptional, especially Jo Van Fleet as "Big Nose" Kate; Rhonda Fleming ("The Queen of Technicolor") as Lancaster's love interest; and John Ireland as Johnny Ringo. Also look for Dennis Hopper (in an early role) Lee Van Cleef, DeForest Kelly, Earl Holliman, and Martin Milner. The fine director John Sturges ("Bad Day at Black Rock", "The Magnificent Seven") performs masterfully behind the camera and the Technicolor cinematography is breathtaking. One final superlative - the theme song, sung by Frankie Laine is one of the best in any Western and sets the mood of the film perfectly. Highly recommended

The Earp/Clanton feud, and the events leading up to, during ,and following the world famous showdown that occurred on October 22,1881 have been filmed by Hollywood many, many times, from Frontier Marshal, starring Randolph Scott as Wyatt Earp and Cesar Romero as Doc Holliday (actually called Halliday in this film), the classic My Darling Clementine with Henry Fonda and Victor Mature in the roles of Earp and Holliday, Hour of The Gun, which focused on the aftermath of the shootout and starred James Garner and Jason Robards, to two more recent versions - Wyatt Earp, starring Kevin Costner in the tile role with Dennis Quaid playing Holliday, and the modern classic Tombstone, with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer playing Earp and Holliday.

My Darling Clementine is the best overall film, and Tombstone had the most outrageous Doc Holliday in Kilmer, but without question the best one-two pairing of Earp and Holliday were Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas in The Gunfight at The OK Corral.

First of all, the story has been filmed so many times because it's so compelling. A legendary marshal befriended by a notorious gambler/killer/consumptive ends us joining in a gunfight with the marshal's brothers against a group of murderous cattle rustlers. So the you've got the story. The other key ingredients, besides great costumes and a great script by Leon Uris are the cast and the director. Lancaster and Douglas are outstanding as Earp and Holliday, the former in this film a staid, by-the book tight shirt lawman, and the latter, a free-gambling, death wishing gunfighter who makes the most unlikely friend of his life in a lawman. The always sleazy Lyle Bettger plays Ike Clanton, John Ireland plays Johnny Ringo, and Jo Van Fleet plays Kate, Holliday's long-suffering girlfriend.

The director was John Sturges, who not only filmed Hour of The Gun ten years later, but also filmed a number of other classic films, Last Train From Gun Hill, Ice Station Zebra, and two other films that he is best known for - The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape. His skill at creating tension, making the most out of every scene, and eliciting the best performances out of his cast, help to make Gunfight at The OK Corral one of the top 10 Westerns of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Filmic UHD
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 30, 2024
A classic western and it’s been given a great release, originally shot in Vistavision which is basically a higher resolution 35mm frame that yields finer detail, back in the seventies and all the way through the nineties they used to shoot the effects sequences for films using Vistavision, you will see it listed for movies like Star Wars or Titanic.

This release has never looked as good as it does here, the fine film grain is present and with it all the rich detail and the colours look absolutely superb, you get the original mono sound or a 5.1 remix which widens the music score, it’s mostly front heavy the 5.1 track as is to be expected but it’s my preferred option as it does make the excellent music score sound fuller and more engaging.

I like the film a lot, the two lead actors Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas are wonderful and the supporting actors are all very good, great direction from John Sturges too, I highly recommend this 4K UHD release.

Doppiaggio originale dell'epoca.

This film is recognized as a classic Western. Almost up there with the Magnificent Seven. Burt Lancaster and Kirk
Douglas are on top of their game. They are backed by a fine cast too boot. The action is non-stop and builds to
its inevitable conclusion. For fans of high-powered, action-based Westerns, this should be a must see. On top of that, this movie was made years before the age of Spaghetti Westerns. The golden age of movie-making, with great
direction, a great score by Dimitri Tiomkin, and a stellar cast.
