Spookiest movie ever made before Steven Spielberg's "Something Evil" in 1972, William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" in 1973, David Lynch's "Eraserhead" in 1977 or Alfred Sole's "Alice Sweet Alice" also from 1977! This movie also reminds me of Orson Welles' "The Trial" in 1962 but with a much creepier, however less complex background in the fact that the characters look more threatening yet somehow behave less abrasively than the cast of the Welles film! It literally looks just as much like a nightmare on celluloid as the Lynch film but because this movie was released nearly 50 years earlier, that explains why the special effects look a lot more primitive and yet this presentation still delivers an equally eerie atmosphere in it's extremely ghoulish and sinister plot with a bittersweet conclusion at the end of this short German language film!Read full review

Not for everyone, Dryer's Vampyr presents the viewer with unsettling and odd special effects to create a very creepy atmosphere. This Criterion version has far better subtitles than the ones that are in wide release, which block off about one-third of the frame. Haunting musical score. This film is almost a silent film, dialogue (in German) is sparing.
