An amazing film I always referred to as the Japanese "Wizard of OZ" without the Witches, Munchkins, Tin Men or Scarecrows. Without any special fx for that matter save for lighting, sound and smoke. A rite of passage for 4 people in feudal Japan who seek their rainbows in vain only to return home to half of what they once had. A hard lesson for Dorothy, harder for these folks. The sounds of War and images of misery connected by moments of real humor and extacy make this film a voyage through the emotions as well. See it without expectation of any sort, this is not a traditional American epic.
Ugetsu is a classic film in the jidaigeki genre, and one of the best known films by director Kenji Mizoguchi. It is both a ghost story and a harrowing warning against the evils of self-importance. I would recommend it to any fan of Kurosawa's films, or to any beginner looking to expand their Japanese collection.
