I recently became an enormous fan of The Criterion Collection; carefully choosing movies that i've heard or seen or just found out about. In this case, it happened to be a new find. But after reading a quick synopsis of 'The Seventh Seal' I knew this was a must-buy for me and an excellent addition to the already three Criterions in my blu ray collection ('Paths of Glory' & 'Seven Samurai' being the other two). I must say for a film that's just over an hour and a half long it packs so much depth that it never lets down its intrigue. Never was there moments of filler or of useless blabber because every spoken word or imagery had a meaning that correlated to either a past, present or future event. The beautiful thing though was that everything ties in together from the opening shots to the very end, only leaving the viewer to answer the big question the characters in the film try to answer themselves (sorry, I hate giving spoilers). When it comes to picture and sound quality, it is phenomenal; an enormous plus. The contrasts of the pitch blacks with the crisp vividness of the bright whites and grays is perfectly balanced. The detail in every single shot is just jaw dropping even for a film from 1957 (perhaps better than newer films). However, a keen eye can pick up the different variation of the sub-titles provided in some bits and pieces of this particular release (compared to other versions). A minor downfall outweighed by what's already provided, as only a few words were changed. The mono sound track provided is also of top-notch quality that never lets down. The supplements also impressed me, as they crammed so much into one disk. I can't really remember much of what's included but it really adds a lot to the already great value of the film itself. An 83-minute long interview with Ingmar Bergman is just a bit of what I viewed and there's so much more i still haven't touched. All in all, any die-hard enthusiast of classic and important films must have this in their collection. Without a doubt one of the best films and one of the best blu ray in my entire library.Read full review
Great movie but the disc wouldn’t play the last 15 minutes of the film! I checked the disc and there are no scratches or anything. It looks like it’s in perfect condition but no matter what I do I can never watch the very end of the film which was very disappointing.
