This movie has been rated as the 9th greatest British film by the British Film Institute and I can see why. I have always liked it and bought this DVD to replace my failing tape. (The DVD also has "special features" which the tape does not have). It is based upon the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name. I would guess that most people are on one side of the fence or the other when it comes to this movie because the plot is rather unusual (perhaps even surreal) in a sense although very artfully pieced together (the use of color is quite striking). It did win the Academy Award for Best Art Direction. Moira Shearer's dancing is a joy to watch, and of course she is stunning as well. Her performance of a woman torn between the love of a man and the love of her art is top notch.

Based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson, The Red Shoes is a profound piece about art and ambition. it is set partly in Monte Carlo and has a wonderful dance sequence played by Moira Shearer, who is the wearer and dancer of the red shoes. The story is about the terrible conflict between the ambitions of those who reach the heights of great art and their desire to love and live a "normal" life. They are caught and driven on by the ambition of the impressario, Lermontov, whose character is loosely based on the real life Diaghilev. As well, one of Diaghilev's dancers, Leonid Massine, plays an important role in this including his own choreography of the shoemaker. A beautiful and thought provoking movie, it is one of my favorites.

I had no idea at all that a 1948 movie could be so spectacular! For one thing, there are some special effects in the ballet sequence of the title that I would not have thought existed at that time. This old movie seems much more modern than you would dream possible, and I mean that in the best possible way. It's amazing. The sheer spectacle of the ballet productions is worth the price of the film, but you get far more than that. I heartily recommend, especially to anyone who is interested in dance. I wasn't particularly enthralled with dance when I rented this film from Amazon, but if I had a chance to see the level of ballet that this film portrays, I'd want to be at a ballet production every night of the week. In any event, after renting the film, I knew I had to own my own copy. It's a must-see.Read full review

The Red Shoes, the singular fantasia from Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (Black Narcissus, The Small Back Room), is cinema’s quintessential backstage drama, as well as one of the most glorious Technicolor visual feasts ever concocted for the screen. Though the film shows it age it's still a fantastic movie to watch especially on a big screen.
