I liked it...but, I realize it is a product of it's time, early 1930's. MD looks so young, I was a little surprised. The story is familiar, yet sad. At the same time, the consequence of choices and situations are always there.

Keep in mind, this movie is (a lot) more about professor Immanuel Rath (Emil Jannings) than about the diva Dietrich. Marlene accepts this in one of her interviews. To enjoy the movie you need to transport yourself to the 1930s, it truly depicts the melancholy and tragedy states of the German soul, in my opinion. Also, the German version (included in the set) is the one to be seen (with English subtitles) as the English of the actors in the English version is questionable.

In Germany, this is considered THE movie classic and everyone knows the story. Absolutely outstanding classic with a timeless story. It really illustrates human nature and explores personality and traits. Superb acting although it's quite dated. Children probably wouldn't understand the story but adults would definately appreciate it! Note that this is in a DVD format and was issued in 2001, there appears to have been some re-mastering accomplished. Put it in your collection.
Original German language version better than English version; even with sub-titles.
