Slacker was and is one of the formative films of my teenage experience. I picked it up out of curiosity when I was, um, maybe 14, and immediately fell in love with it, buying the accompanying book (with intro by Douglas Coupland) and watching it several times per week. The meandering progression of events (I won't say plot; there is none) and quasi-philosophical leanings of the conversations really shaped my idea of what life could be at a time when I was completely amiss as to how I was supposed to "fit in" to regular society. Richard Linklater's ensemble films tend to showcase what people think rather than how they think. He is primarily concerned with how people see the world, rather than their motives, which gives films like Slacker (and Waking Life, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise et al, and to a lesser degree films like Bernie) a nonjudgmental view of many types of odd people, giving them room to breathe. This Criterion Collection edition contains a 64-page booklet with essays about the film: it's production, it's release and reception. There are, of course, the usual "extras," like casting tapes, stills, and such, but there is also a copy of Linklater's first film "It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books," which is an interesting if not entirely engaging precursor to Slacker. The dream of the 90s may be alive in Portland, but the birth of the 90s was chronicled in Slacker.Read full review

I love this movie if you like ind films this one is for you. This one of the main reasons i bought this movie because of the extra footage and the cliff note book that was inculded on the dvd set. This movie even infulanced Keven Smith into doing clerks. This set other independent film markers on there way to do other films as well. It even infulanced me to write my own book because if Richared Lanklater had to do the drive on makeing his own film i don't see why i can do it for a book.
