According to the liner notes that come with this Criterion Collection version, this film has been reviewed as follows: " The only really satisfactory way to dispose of Peeping Tom would be to shovel it up and flush it swiftly down the nearest sewer. Even then the stench would remain." and also "The sickest and filthiest film I remember seeing." These are, I am certain, among several similar reviews from around the time this film came out in 1960. I contest that any thing that has critics that raving mad (this proved to be director Michael Powell's career ending film) must be good. If this film had been released these days, the critics and the public would surely not have batted an eyelash. But it was released prematurely in 1960, a film far ahead of it's time. The only movie I can compare it to would be Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, which was released the same year with much better reception. These are both films that are mild compared to today's standards in the horror and thriller film industry. But I feel that both films, but especially Peeping Tom, stand alone and cannot be compared to today's, or any other day's standards. This film has such depth that goes beyond the initial plot. It's no wonder it inspired the career of such director's as Martin Scorsese and George Romero (both avid Michael Powell fans). This film is a must see for anyone who has a passion for watching films and an appreciation for how films are made.Read full review
