Like his masterpiece DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST, Bresson's AU HASARD BALTHAZAR combines religious allegory with a naturalistic, austere, and minimalist aesthetic style that matches his ascetic themes. The film tells the story of Marie, an unlucky farm girl, and her beloved donkey Balthazar. As Marie grows up, the pair become separated, but the film traces both their fates as they continue to live a parallel existence. Marie and Balthazar become martyrs, eventually taking the sins of others upon their own heads and finding transcendence in the process. AU HASARD BALTHAZAR is like Bresson's other works in that it seamlessly combines the naturalistic and the spiritual.

Au Hasard Balthazar is the story of the Donkey that is handed down again and again to a myriad of owners. Balthazar is the true Beast of Burden, works as hard as he can to serve his Masters, no matter how badly they treat him. The Director, Robert Breeson, has the Minimalist style, and uses imagery to tell the story elements that implies, or leads, the audience to think about what has occured, or even what is to happen. Balthazar's cycle of treatment by people is similar to how Marie's, his first owner, life has endured. Both encounter the dark side of people, and Balthazar still is ready to serve with everything he has. The Special Features are a must-see for anyone who admires Robert Breeson's works, and the 1966 French TV show that has Jean-Luc-Godard, Louis Malle and Breeson. This is ... A donkey is the observer of the human condition.
This extraordinary allegory in which the donkey is a christ-figure, incarnated into the human scene. The interview with the Bresson, the director, is most revealing. A special Easter season experience.
