This is a flat out materpiece by Jean-Pierre Melville, with absolutely riveting performances by Lino Ventura, Simone Signoret, and everyone else. This is a dark, brooding, absolutely emotionally overwhelming film. This is not The Great Escape or any other typical war film. This deals with a heroism that gets little to no exposure and their are no happy endings here. This film is a devastating emotional experience.
