Do not confuse this film with the remake starring Al Pacino & Robin Williams. While there is nothing really wrong with the 2002 version, it simply doesn't have the atmosphere of the original! Erik Skjoldbjærg's 1997 film 'Insomnia' is an outstanding atmospheric thriller set in the land of the midnight sun. Police inspector Jonas Engström (Stellan Skarsgård) has been called in to solve the murder of a young girl and although he solves the crime, its not without consequence. It appears that Engström is having issues with the 24 hour day and its causing him some problems separating fact from insomnia induced illusion. An appropriately eerie soundtrack accompanies Skjoldbjærg's slow-paced smoke and mirrors scenography. If you like your thrillers with snap-edits and cute dialogue, this is not the film for you, but if you like films that creep up on you like a slow rolling fog, you owe it to yourself to check this out.Read full review
