Although there I have never seen a bad Bergman movie, they do vary in quality. Cries and Whispers in my view does not belong in the premier league, although it is still a good film. The subject matter of a dying sister in the last agonies of her existence may well fit the classic Bergman obsession with life's travails, but in this particular case the underlying details of the family relationships which emerge throughout the film are not so surprising or revealing as to compensate for the distress of watching the struggling sister. Perhaps we Bergman fans have just become to immune to the kind of agonies that all his films display, but in this particular film the characters are not particularly interesting nor the story line much developed.
