This is the latest Blu-ray DVD of a film that deserves to be seen in the best definition that's possible, due to its award-winning artistry. "Howard's End" was named the Best Picture of 1992 by the National Board of Review. Directed by James Ivory, "Howard's End" is an Edwardian era romance of an intergenerational kind. Based upon the 1910 novel by E.M. Forster, screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala adapted the story for this film. Nominated for a staggering 9 Oscars, Jhabvala's crisp screenplay, Thompson's portrayal of Margaret & the Art Direction won. Vanessa Redgrave's brief portrayal of Ruth Wilcox, however, leaves a lasting mark of her spirit enduring throughout the film. It's as if Ruth annointed Margaret before she died to take up her place on Earth. Thus, this film has a glory of layers to consider which take many more than one viewing to grasp. To the plot: A wealthy woman, Ruth Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave), becomes determined to leave her country estate, Howards End, to a younger woman, Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson. Mrs. Wilcox, who's dying of cancer, recognizes that Schlegel's a mild-mannered Londoner of qualities similar to her own; yet, Schlegel's of a different social class & her family home's going to be taken away Ruth's husband, Henry Wilcox (Sir Anthony Hopkins), is an uppity classist businessman, who only divulgea his wife's last wishes to his adult children who burn the document. After Ruth dies, slowly but surely, Henry & Margaret marry. Class-crossing romances during Edwardian times was socially unaccepted. Margaret's lower class values & beliefs conflict with Henry's upper class ones. Their mixed-class marriage is stressed by class variance. Margaret's loyal sister, Helen (Helena Bonham Carter), doesn't like her brother-in-law's behaviors. Helen worried about how they adversely affect Margaret. Inadvertently or not, Helen throws a monkey wrench into the conflicts of the Wilcox's marriage. It's an unhappily married man, Leonard Bast (Samuel West), a bank clerk both Helen & Margaret have been helping to reach his intellectual & career aspirations. But, Henry & Ruth's adult son, Charles (James Wilby), turns the twists between the 3 families of opposites into a tragedy. However, Margaret, holds steadfastly true to her profound belief that people's differences can be overcome~Read full review
I don’t have to review the movie itself, it’s its own reward and worthy of your time. This rare out of print Criterion Blu-ray still holds up really well 8 years later. The package sent to me has a little bit of wear and tear with a few scratches on the plastic and 2-3 fingerprints on the disc, but otherwise it works fine.

Incredible performances directed by James Ivory of yet another beautiful story by E.M Forster! Joins "Maurice" and "A Room with a View" as movies for people who still have some brain cells left! I have nothing more to add to those who have rated this movie as one ofthe finest and literate movies ever made. Thank you ebay member (who made this especially two disc version) available online. Even our local library does not have a copy of this movie!!!
