The Antoine Doinel cycle breaks every stereotype about old French films being pretentious and dull and overly long. These movies are funny and bittersweet by turns, relatatable even decades later, and populated by characters (the protagonist, in particular) who are equal parts lovable and frustrating. We follow Antoine through his early teens as a mischievious student, treated with little kindness or understanding by his parents and teachers (The 400 Blows, 1959); his experiences with first love (Antoine and Colette, 1962); his odd jobs and courtships (Stolen Kisses, 1968); marriage and fatherhood (Bed and Board, 1970); and his quest for both closure and contentment (Love on the Run, 1979). Highly recommended for anyone who loves classic movies, especially but not limited to the French New Wave.Read full review
