Removed of major actors of any kind (not even recognizeable soap stars), the story of the Bible camp children trapped by this flood (which I do remember the newscasts) is incredibly well done for tv movies grossly exploiting tragedies such as this. Yes, we have Joe Spano of Hill Street Blues, really kind of lost as the driver of the bus. I remember the movie when it aired and how the flood played out; the gradual increase of the water as soon as the bus and the van were crossing. Floods are unpredictable, as are most natural disasters. We aren't given much to focus on as the kids go; one in a cast, one with leukemia, the brother with his two sisters, but some of the actors manage to do pretty good with what they are given, such as Mike, the brother who lost his two sisters, and the fellow with the cast on his leg. The situation, for all its simplicity, is well placed. When the tragedy strikes, it is sudden, unprecedented. No one could have foreseen that happening. An act of God. The movie stages the accident well, not trying to show any hint of what happened. It just occurred. The kids swimming in the water among nothing more than trees, all is also well done. With a much better musical score, this could have been utterly heart-wrenching. When I have thought about this movie and the circumstances, the music in my head was wholly dramatic. The incorporation of actual news footage is tolerable, save for the one obvious news shot of an actual girl trapped in a tree. We aren't told who she was and it appears she isn't portrayed in the movie. An enormous minus. I really want to emphasize who the girl was the helicopter was trying to save. I don't think we are given a clear picture who she was, and likewise we aren't really told who is the boy finally rescued at that moment. These are minuses. If nothing else, we could have just had a single emphasis on these kids, so we are forced to recognize them when we see them. I really didn't know who Leslie was and had to go back to see who she had been. And finally, the monument shown at the end of the movie doesnt seem to have the same kids names from the movie on it, and likewise, none of them have the same last name, as a pair of sisters are killed in the movie. I have seen a post from the mother of these kids, and am awaiting to hear from her as to why this was the case. A very good effective movie. And I don't understand critiques on another site that say it was a strict church camp. Generally group Bible readings is looked upon as strict nowadays.Read full review
