Eyes Without a Face is the first French film I've ever watched all the way through. It is a beautiful movie, visually arresting. You won't get anything like this from an American horror movie of that time...or anytime really. It is actually shockingly graphic for a movie from '59. Some people might be turned off because it's not in English, or because it's b&w...philistines lol. It's a great movie! If you can't handle the captions at the bottom and/or b&w, your loss I guess.

If you've seen this 1959 classic before, it's worth a new look now that face transplants are a reality. In 1959, the concept was pure science fiction. This film has a reputation for being shockingly graphic. If you've ever performed (or seen) surgery, you won't understand the fuss. There are no brutal attacks on conscious victims, just a very explicit scene of a surgeon cutting off an anesthetized woman's face. The horror derives from the psychological effect on the victims: both the unwilling donors, and on the recipient who becomes more traumatized with each failed surgery. The film is in French, but the subtitles really aren't an issue. There isn't a lot of dialogue. The visuals succeed in telling much of the story. I didn't really understand why the doctor had 28 dogs in cages under his lab (experiments? Protection?) The dogs are ultimately necessary to the plot, but why are they there to begin with? Fun fact: THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE, released in 1962, is essentially the same story. Doctor causes car accident that disfigures/decapitates his daughter/fiancee. Doctor subjects unwilling daughter/conscious disembodied head to experimental procedures. Doctor kidnaps random women to donate new face/body. The difference is that EYES WITHOUT A FACE is tragic and heartbreaking, while the latter emphasizes sleaze and camp. Read full review

It took a few minutes for me to get used to the subtitles but movie itself was interesting, well produced and very enjoyable.
