I really appreciate the early directors of this era/movement. I think it will never go out of style and will always be appealing. For anyone of like mind, be sure to check out the films of Ramin Bahrani. Especially "Goodbye Solo". Not sure why I mention this, it just seems relevant. Great stuff.

I happened upon this movie quite by accident, I never watch what I think is going to be a 'sad' movie, but although this is about an elderly man and his attempt to just live the last few years of his life with dignity and to find suitable lodging for himself and his dog (whom he loves dearly and is loved in return), it is a grim look at what it must be like with few real friends to turn to. Mr. Umberto keeps his dignity through it all and in the end decides to carry on with that same dignity. I would have loved to call him my friend. You won't sit around with a box of tissues while watching this movie. Mr. Umberto wouldn't hear of it.
