I consider it a fine film by Truffaut on the production of a film. Unlike Burden of Dreams which was a documentary, Truffaut choose a story to show his world to the audience. It possesses some solid writing, fine acting and good direction and attends to character development. It was well done from start to finish.
I remember seeing this film as a film student. It seemed to move a bit faster, and seemed dated. Though it was fun to see a young Jacqueline Bisset, and Truffaut, my son, who is a media student in college, fell asleep. I think this type of film did not hold up.
I bought this for a friend, who also knows it well. This is one of the most charming and positive films of the French cinema, full of quirks, jokes, romance and pathos. It bears repeated watching and is a testament to Truffaut's great humanity. A very able cast includes the lovely goddess Jackie Bisset, and I'd guess they all had a lot of fun making it.
