The Criterion Collection proves once again to the film community why they are the best home entertainment company in the world. Guillermo del Toro’s promising and daring directorial debut is given the proper DVD treatment that it should’ve been done since the medium’s inception. Running at a brisk 92 minutes, CRONOS is a vastly personal tale about the seductiveness of the knowledge of immortality. Future del Toro regular Federico Luppi (THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE) gives a once-in-a-lifetime performance as a caring antiques dealer who discovers something wonderful, yet sinister. Invented by an alchemist almost 400 years ago, the Cronos device claims to be the key of eternal life or so we thought. While Luppi falls prey to the device’s addictive impact, a reclusive industrialist sends his frustrated nephew to steal the compact Fountain of Youth for personal gain. Ron Perlman, who would star in HELLBOY I & II, is delightfully unbalanced as a desperate man who wants nothing more than a nose job and run his uncle’s company. Containing awe-inspiring makeup effects and a melancholy score from Javier Alvarez, CRONOS is Guillermo del Toro’s stunning calling card onto the cinematic landscape of horror. P.S.-Hope I didn't spoil the whole movie for you!Read full review
