While typing this I still can't believe what I just watched and thankfully enough I had a couple of wine glass's to relax my senses. This movie is like all over the place but its essentially two inter-cut stories, but I can explain better by separating them two. Weirdly enough I'll start with the second story with a woman (Anna Prucnal) who helms a boat through the canals of Amsterdam with a bust of Marx on the bow. A sailor on a bicycle from the battleship Potemkin pursues her, as he wants to be her next lover. She is "revolution" and warns him that her lovers always die. While that is playing out, controversy occurs when she seduces several young children. Makevejev intercuts German footage of the uncovering of Polish victims of the Russian massacre at Katyn Forest. He contrasts Prucnal's victims with the dead Polish army. In the primary plot line, a world beauty contest is held to find the most beautiful virgin in the world, who will become the bride of a rich Texas oilman (Dean Wormer!) who is obsessed with cleanliness. Miss Canada (Carole Laure) is the winner. The couple gets married and helicopters to his home. He undresses, scrubs her with alcohol, and then shows her his golden swhwartz, whereupon she starts screaming uncontrollably. Eventually, his overbearing mother sends her packing (literally packed into a suitcase) where she has adventures with a macho Mexican singer at the Eiffel Tower, but becomes increasingly withdrawn and mute, and ends up in the Otto Muehl Troupe commune. It is this section which earned the film's notoriety, as the troupe believes in a kind of therapy where we all get in touch with our base selves, and have monthly events where they target a member, and engage in overeating, public defecation and urination, debasement, etc. The film ends with an amazing nude bath in chocolate. Despite the constant sexuality and shock value, few scenes are actually erotic. Director Makavejev has more on his mind than just sex, however. He spends a good deal of time on political satire. Some, like the Texas oilman sequence, is heavy-handed and cartoonish (though his vision of 1984 America and its sexual double standards, with the funding of the Chastity Belt Foundation, quite presciently anticipates Reaganite America). More fierce is his criticism of the Soviet denial of the Katyn Forest massacre, boldly using Nazi footage of the exhumations, then frequently disparaged as mere propaganda but now known to be the truth, to accuse the Russians of genocidal war crimes. Besides that "Sweet Movie" is clearly not for kids (though they like sugar), or even most adults, this is a movie only for those who want to have there buttons pushed.Read full review
There where two plots in Sweet Movie a movie that mixes reality and fiction a movie that was made in 1974. The first one is about Miss World 1984 who wins a contest to marry a millionare by being the best virgin. Her groom groom does something beyond bizzare and gross on the wedding night. The bride basically goes through hell then ends up in a real commune The Theraphy Commune Vieanna. Most of the people in these scenes were really members in the commune and the director just let them be their true selves there was real pooping and peeing and breast milk, There is a scene where one adult woman is breast feeding another adult woman. The second plot is about a prostitute a woman driven crazy by the deaths of failed rebels during revolutionary wars in the Soviet Union. I love the sex and dessert theme of this movie a man and woman making love in a vat of sugar, a sexy woman bathing in chocolate. and a wonderful swimming pool scene. There are also some scenes that show the real atrocities of war, like actual footage of bodies of Executed Polish Soliders in Kaetyn forrest and footage of baby gymnastics in World War II. This footage is hard to watch but it tells a story that can not be denyed. The one scene that I hated was the scene where the prostitute was doing a strip tease for kids. This scene was not nessasary to the plot of the movie but luckily this part of the movie was totally fictional and the kids were not really hurt, this movie is legal in the USA but still that is pushing the bounderies of sex too far. Press the skip button on your remote for this scene! Sweet Movie is supposed to be about the hardships of revolution and commercalism. I watched it for the sexual interaction between consenting adults but I also learned things about World History that I did not know before.Read full review
I saw this film four times when it was shwing in Stockholm around 1974. I just want to give you my interpretation of Dusan piece of art. This is NOT a comedy, it is pure art in its most advaced form, a motion picture. The film is a warning to human kind. I hear people saying it is two 'storys'. No it is two different perspectives of the same story: Ours. And to underscore - these perspectives are intertwined, so the film jumps between them back and forth. The initial story is about a girl, that moves like a red thread from the extreme rightwing peoples screwed-up'ed environment, attributeses, actions and behaviour - to the far left peoples screwed-up'ed environment, attributeses, actions and behaviour. And she takes the path via the romantic, spanish culture, in the Eiffel tower, as a midpoint of the story. This is an interesting way to describe ourselves, a sort of 'this is basically how it is.' A thng Dusan is fixated with, for good reasons, is the 'male phallos phenomenon', as this is really an important ingredience around our, actually rather primitive life. Far, far back in time. We will see many cock-related scenes - but rhe movie start with a directly opposite scene - the clitoris of the best valued virgin on the planet - AND the film ends with the same, now resignated woman, crawling in fluid chocolade - naked. A desciption of the tragic trap we can find ourselves in. In between those two scenes, we will see a pissing golden erection, a afroamerican ropejumping dick, a situation where the spanish romantic guitarist get stuck by her vagina in a spasmodic paralysis, AND in one of the greatest phallos symbols of the world: the Eiffel tower! Talk about sublime filmistic language! Further on, a pissing on food cock scene and a poop contest on a chain-driven ship goods elevator, with the chains clappering, and the choir on ths barge, singin the Internationale in a funny way. The second story, shifting in and out, is about how we are tempded to try to change the Status Quo of the other perspective - change the here-and-now. Instantly by more or less violent revolutions. Anna Planeta symbolizes the tempter, with her boat filled with candy and sugar. And with Karl Marx big head in the fore of her ship. And the 'potemkin'-sailor is the good man trying to catch the ship, waving, shouting and smiling back on Annas flirts. That is the clear sighted dreamer, that want to change the world, only he could join 'the revolution. And he succeeds with that, gets f***ed and murdered by the same revolution. Anna. The blue and white documentary film showing the polish massgraves, underscores the seriousness of this, otherwise VERY funny movie. You will never forget Sweet Movie. A must see-reel! The warning is NOT to try to scare people from dreaming of a better wotld, it is about HOW we should do it. Use never violence. Learn historical facts. Learn to identify small groups propaganda from true facts. Develop the equality based democracy. And learn the basics of Jesus true message: The simple principles of socialism: Equality, Siblinghood, Freedom (not the freedom to enslave or exploit the work of others) Eternal love, solidarity, commonwealth for all, where we cannot own a territory, only lease our fair share. There is a part in the new testament: Acts 4, v. 32-37 that shows how they looked at the socialistic way of living, From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs. The first definition is from the message of the man, Jesus, and this part is also labeled 'Community of property'. This is facts only, and I am not a christian, but I have a personal belief. That was just my 2 cents! =) Threat others as you want them to be treated. Love all, even your enemies. J von NRead full review

"In all my years of practice I have never seen something so sweet...a rosebud" thus opens one of the greatest "comedies" this humble urcen has ever viewed! its funny, horrorfying, and a simple work of genuis! its easy to watch yet diffacult to look away, this film is worth watching many, many times, if only to show it to to close friends and mortal enemies alike, although if you are easily offened, GET STUFT, Gooday!
Sweet Movie is a very odd and weird movie. I'm sure there was some sort of artistic value or symbolism to the film. I will not explain the story. But I will say it was made in 1974, its a foreign film, and might of been rated X. It contains nudity, sex, bizarre behavior, and gross images. Its not for kids. The only part that I really liked was when the key female character gets naked and rolls around in choclate. She then does sexy poses covered in chocolate.
