This is about a writer trying to put together a movie-- a famous movie, updated and modernized. Right, like that happens? Shot is the mid sixties, the movie is actually more intelligent than most of the movies of that time, and it has Fritz Lang in it. Yes, the real, honest to the n-th degree Fritz Lang-- ACTING. Any movie with Brigitte Bardot, Michel Piccoli, Paul Javal, Jack Palance, Jeremy Prokosch, Giorgia Moll, and Francesca Vanini has to be good, even if they were just reading the telephone book, but adding Fritz Lang? It's worth it, if just for that part, but the rest is pretty good, too.
This film is a work of art. It is not a movie in the conventional sense. Those who are disturbed be cinematic experimentation may be angered by Godard's parody of Hollywood's conventional film techniques. There is no happy ending. The scenes are not in a logical sequence. Godard experiments with lighting and uses filters to induce different emotions. And not all of them are happy. But neither is life. Viewed in its entirety, it is a beautiful montage: "a combination of documentary and theater." Godard opened my mind to film as another form of artistic expression, not inferior to fine art or writing.
