Be careful. There are at least 3 versions of the movie in home video circulation / release. The original version released in Italy (155 min, likely rated R). The international version released in USA and other places (121 min, rated PG). This is the version most reviewed and the one that won the academy award for best foreign film in 1989. Then there is "The New Version" (also sometimes labeled Director's Cut; but a misnomer as the original release was the Director's Cut). This latter release is 173 min and Rated R. A majority of the material in the "New Version" occurs late in the film and revolves around a love story the teenager has with a local, forbidden girl and then rediscovers when he returns for the funeral. Almost a sequel. The cover as shown here in most listings has different content with slightly different back covers. One a release of just the New Version (barcode 031398139362). Another has both the New and International (Academy Award) Version (barcode 786936204018).Read full review

just one of those perfect movies. We saw it when it first came out and it was just as beautiful and sad as it was then.. I miss those movies... this one and Il Postino and others... not everything has to be War and Peace!!!6 stars!!!!
Lovely film about a young boy learning about life in a cinema in Sicily. It begins in WWII and comes up to the present day. It may seem a little slow at the beginning, but you soon realize that you are so fascinated by the boy, the village and the cinema that you have to watch the film to the end.
Classic movie about love, life, potential. You will fall in love with the movie and its characters the way the characters fall in love with each other. Not to be missed...
