One of the best BBC series; warm thoughtful plotlines, morality tales whose import goes down with no lumps whatsoever. Funny too. The Beeb has apparently stopped making content for anyone over 50, but there are still DVD resources. Unfortunately, buying used discs has become chancy, and our set has several bad episodes, so that one must watch those on the web and endure the horrible commercial interruptions. They seem to have been placed at the worst possible times and sometimes cannot be exed out.

Favorite series from the BBC, these are delightful. The is one or two spots on the disks that do skip and it is difficult to follow then it jumps thru the story. The packing was loose inside and the disks moved about.

Well first, understand that my wife and I truly love this series. It's timeless, heartfelt, and true to life on so many levels. The series is EXCELLENT! I had taped many of the episodes off the TV on VHS, but now we are so happy to have the WHOLE series on DVD that we can watch anytime we want. The disks themselves leave a little to be desired. I didn't realize that I was buying a Chinese bootleg version of the series when I bid on it. I bid on it when the price seemed right, and it was only my 3rd or 4th Ebay purchase and I didn't know enough to look at the origin of the item. Anyway, two of the disks are mislabeled, all of the disks were in the wrong cases, and so far one of the disks has a couple of drop-outs in the middle of one of the episodes, otherwise everything seems OK with the set. We still have a couple of disks to view yet though. All in all I do have to say that the quality is WAY better than my VHS taped off TV videos, so I can't complain too loudly. If anyone has seen this show and liked it. If anyone is 50+ and married. If anyone is a fan of british sitcom's you can't go wrong getting this series. You'll watch it over and over again.Read full review
Brilliantly written, directed, and--especially-- acted. The chemistry between Judi Dench and Philip Bretherton (Jean & Lionel) is such a delight to watch, We love PBS and most of their family friendly programs.. We love being able to watch them on our very own DVD's anytime day or night. Never worrying that the cable service may go out at anytime and we may have wasted our time watching what we did get to see ... We will be watching this DVD's for many years to come. From commonsensemedia ..Parents need to know that even though it's pretty tame from a content perspective -- a bit of kissing and drinking and rare uses of "damn" are about the worst of it -- this witty British sitcom isn't likely to interest teens, since they won't relate to the aging characters' issues

One of the best sitcoms ever, in my opinion. The characters are carefully drawn and exhibit multiple dimensions. The writing is clever without trying to be too terribly clever. The central characters follow lots of traditional modeling (male and female role models) while allowing he supporting characters to act very nontraditional, yet by getting along very well mix the variations together into a coherent whole. Minor characters are allowed even more range -- "the villagers" are very diverting. The sense of whim is always there, allowing he characters to see more alive..... and of course the casting is flawless. Simply put if you want an engaging situation comedy that seems quite realistic, this is a great diversion. If you love some of the past American sit-coms in which the characters seem to grate heavily on each other, relieving their stresses in barbed jests, this will probably seem dull or at least much too polite. It's gentle and warm, not the reverse. Now if you will excuse me I believe I might have a custard tart (it's a joke based on the show).Read full review
